Minutes of the CE-4.0 RF Connectors Committee
June 25, 2001
EIA Building - Arlington

1.0 The Minutes from the 2-22-01 meeting were read and accepted after amendment of item 7.0 DSCC Interchangeability Statement Addition to Mil-PRF-39012: "All connectors having same identifying P/N shall be completely interchangeable with each other with respect to performance specified in the appropriate slash sheet" was "…with respect to performance".

2.0 Beryllium Copper (BeCu) Shortage
The BeCu shortage is a non-issue at this time due to a major slowdown in the RF industry. DSCC stated that alternate inferior spring materials can only be used in a non-standard connector. There are still health and enviro issues being reviewed in Europe. Mike Keating will check to see if there are any material proposals in Europe. John Morelli (johnmo@svmicro.com) will chair a "Beryllium Copper Sub-Committee" on alternate materials. Members include: Tyco, Gilbert, (SV), Amphenol, Rosenberger, True, Radiall, Kings and Micro-Coax.

3.0 ECA Connector Interface Review
The connector interface final drafts will be submitted ECA by Chairman John Schimelfanick. John requested the drafts delivered to him in two versions (.dxf ) and (.pdf ) or "word".

3.1 BNC 75 Ohm Pin and Socket
Final version approved with change to Jack dimension "E" .118 min will be added.

2 3.2 Miniature 75 Ohm SMB
All versions require update with respect to contact detail, jack groove details and location tolerances per Mil-Std-348. The plug interface hood diameter .250 dimensions will be removed as well as the generic impedance design notes and force gage notes. Art changes will be addressed by AEP.

.1 MCX, 50 Ohm
Several text changes will be updated by Tyco.

.2 MMCX
No issues.

.3 TNC 75 Ohm
Text will be added about "slotted and flared" plug interface.

.4 N Type 75 Ohm
Update Ref Plane on plug and plug pin diameter .035+-.001 was .033/.036. Add contact details per Mil-Std-348.

.5 SMA 75 Ohm
Diameter .046+-.001 was .045/.046 based on Agilent Standard requirements, Contact Location .000/.010 was .010 max on plug and jack. Plug Diameter .1808 max was .1800 max. Contact details will be added per Mil-Std-348 and notes reviewed.

.6 Mini "SMP"
Various producers submit five arts for review. Craig Baker objects to "MSMP" designation due to association with a specific supplier. Discussion led to an agreement of "SMPM" as the new designation. Ron Gary of Defense Supply Center, Columbus (DSCC) agrees with the designation and Mil-Std-348 will be changed.

Michael Keating has several interface dimensional changes for discussion. A working group for this interface, chaired by Craig Baker, will review these issues and produce a generic proposal document for the interface. Members of the SMPM working group are Amphenol, CDI, Radiall, Rosenberger, Tyco, Gore and Corning Gilbert. Response to the CDI proposed art is requested by 7-13-01 to Craig.

3.9 TK Interface
Airforce would like the 4.0 Committee to review the TK interface for inclusion in ECA. Several manufacturers submit arts for review by the committee including a General Dynamics (original customer) drawing. Comments will be presented by CDI and Gore after review of the General Dynamics drawing.

4.0 ECA Membership
Michael Tinkleman, John Willis and Sheron Miles made presentations on behalf of the EIA and ECA. Membership options were explained and folder info distributed. "Committee Only" membership can transfer to full ECA membership without charge due to a 50% discount for new ECA memberships (normally $2000, now $1000) The ECA website provides links to member websites as well as 25% discounts for Global Engineering specifications and access to marketing reports, summits etc.. Also no extra cost for membership on other ECA working committees.

5.0 New Gasket Material L449-65
Ron Gary found a product that did not meet -65C to +125C temperature requirement. Need to investigate specifications body for L449-65 pertaining to fluorosilicone. DSCC will coordinate specifications in 31031 and 39012. Fuel resistance is required.

6.0 ECA Connector Interfaces- New Proposals / Updates

.1 Screw On 75 Ohm
Art presented by AEP. Updates will include "contact / insulator" note.

.2 2.92mm or "SMK"
Committee members are asked to submit arts for review.

.3 SMP Update
Michael Keating submitted arts of inter-mate issues at worst case dimensions. Committee members (including Gilbert, CDI, Tyco, Radiall, Amphenol, Gore and Rosenberger) will review and provide comment on these issues. Ron Gary and Michael will provide additional information concerning any actual field failures.

7.0 Performance Specifications
It may be time to start adding performance specifications to the associated interface standards.

Next Meeting: To be determined.
