P14 Committee's Scope: Covers the setting of standards and specification
for supplementary overcurrent/overvoltage type devices to be used in
low-voltage applications in electric and electronic equipment. These
include fuses, electromechanical or solid state circuit protection devices,
positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor-type devices, fusible
resistors, varistors, thyristors, gas discharge tubes and other devices.
The Committee shall not develop standards and specifications for branch
circuit protection or panel mounted devices that are covered under the
National Electric Code NFPA 70.
Chairman Dan Giblin called the
meeting to order at 2:00pm.
1.0 Committee Organization and Procedures
1.1 Membership and attendance
Self-introduction was made and attendance taken.
1.2 Approval of the Agenda
The committee unanimously accepted the Agenda as presented.
1.3 Approval of the Minute
The minutes were unanimously approved.
1.4 Correspondence
No Correspondence was received.
1.5 DSCC Report
No reports.
2.0 Old Business
2.1 SP- 4357-A, Low Voltage Supplemental Fuse Qualification Specification
- Status
Sent out for ballot and received one negative ballot from Dennis Warren/Schurter.
Dennis is no longer with this company. Dennis requested some verbiage/wording
be added to 2 separate figures. Dan asked Ed Mikoski whether the committee
needed to send the ballot out again to remove this negative comment.
Ed recommended the committee to go around the table and ask each participating
member to vote. Carl Lindquist made motion to proceed with this voting
process. No discussion on this matter. It was unanimously decided
to accept the document.
2.2 Ad-Hoc Committee updates
2.2.1 Mechanical Outlines - C. Lindquist
Mechanical outlines database developed 2 years ago for EIA PDP-100
is now a charter for the P4 committee. It will be discuss in-depth
at the P4 tomorrow meeting. Next step is to request capacitors,
inductors and resistors manufacturers to provide data for the database.
Upon completion, ECA will provide a link to each participating member
site.
Carl L. will make a presentation/update on this database tomorrow
during the P4
meeting.
2.2.2 PTC Documents Status - B. Travis
Bill Travis was to provide an update. Per Carl L., this was supposed
to be done in conjunction with EIA.
2.3 Surge Fuses - Standards Proposal No. 4951, Proposed New Specification
" Surge Withstand Telecommunication Fuse Qualification Spec".
Review revised draft if provided.
Neither proposal nor teleconferences ever happen. Carl L made a motion
that we approved this document as it was balloted in Sept. It was
unanimously decided to pass SP 4951.
2.4 Scope
It was suggested that we revert back to old scope since IEEE would
like to handle over voltage products. Carl L. made a motion to revert
back to original Scope. It was unanimously decided to change back
to original Scope.
ORIGINAL SCOPE
P14 Committee's scope: Covers the setting of standards and specification
for supplementary overcurrent type devices to be used in low-voltage
applications in electric and electronic equipment. These include fuses,
electromechanical or solid state circuit protection devices, positive
temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor-type devices, fusible resistors
and other related devices. The Committee shall not develop standards
and specifications for branch circuit protection or panel mounted devices
that are covered under the National Electric Code NFPA 70.
3.0 New business
3.1 New Projects
3.1.1 Polymer ESD Devices
This item will be removed from our agenda until further interest.
3.1.2 Development of Technology Roadmap
Dan Giblin will present a preliminary draft of our Roadmap.
Ed Mikoski suggested the committee begin working on the outlines
of a Roadmap during this session since time permitted. .
ROADMAP ------Overcurrent Devices
For PTC, Fuses, Breakers
Trends - smaller
- less expensive
- higher energy Density
- higher precision (100 +/- 5%)
- higher and lower voltage rating
Environmental
- lead-free and others - Beryllium and cadmium
- higher process temperatures
Materials
- New ceramics - feed higher(current and voltage ratings)
(Cold fired ceramics)
Fuses (types of fuses)
- Elements
- Thin Film
- Thick Film
- Multilayer
Breakers (types of breakers)
- Magnetic
- Thermal
PTC
- Ceramic (since 60's)
- Polymer (since 1980)
- circuits can be built to cut off current.
- Emerging Tech
o UWB - at present it is more difficult to put fuses in circuit.
ISSUES
- alarming
- arcing
- vented fuses
smallest 0402
largest 13/32"
range: 600V(largest voltage), 60A(largest current)
24V(smallest voltage), 2mA(smallest current)
Demand for universal fuse? A fuse that can be used anywhere in the
world. It's a standards issue why this is difficult to precede.
Automotive need high temp for 42V circuit.
4.0 Next meeting
The next meeting will be held the week of 6-9 October 2003 at the San
Antonio Marriott Rivercenter, San Antonio, TX. Next P14 meeting is Monday,
October 6.
5.0 Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at approximately at 3:40pm.
This meeting was conducted in accordance with the EIA Legal Guidelines
and the Manual of Organization and Procedures.
