Motion to approve 5/2000 JT-32 minutes. Seconded. Motion carried to approve minutes as presented.

1.4 Correspondence

None

1.5 EDSC

No EDSC meeting planned for Corning. Nothing new to announce. Not enough agenda items for a meeting.

1.6 Other Committee Coordination

JT-31 - TEP-105-11B, and TEP-105-16A were published in June 2000. They will be requested to be put up on the ECA web page. Action Item
JT-6 - Glossary of CRT terms will be published. TEP-106-C, WTDS final edits will be worked on by Bill Rowe / Michael Tinkleman.

1.7 ECA JT-32 Web Site Demonstration

Michael Tinkleman, ECA gave a demonstration of the new ECA web site including the JT-32 Committee information already posted - minutes, scope, agenda, meeting announcement, and 5/2000 meeting attendees.

An interest was expressed in setting up a discussion group for JT-32 on the ECA web site. Potential areas of interest are recent UL and CSA changes. Action Item

2.0 International Safety Standards

2.1 IEC 61965 Impact Testing Standards Status

IEC 61965 has been approved. Currently waiting on it being circulated. The printed publication is expected by the end of the year.

2.2 Laminated film on CRT Faceplate / IEC-WG-2

UL is reviewing some statistical data to determine whether you need the plastic film or not. Also, if somebody removes the film, is the tube still safe? Currently, there is not enough data to reach a clear decision on the use of plastic film at this time. Studies are continuing. The committee needs to continue to track this issue. No standards related activities are necessary for this issue at this time.

2.3 IEC/TC-39WG2 / X-Radiation Standard Task Force Report (prepared by Michael Chenoweth)

A brief review of previous discussion from the last two meetings was presented.

· TEP-197 Annex 1 Radiation Units of Measure
· TEP-197 Annex 2 X-radiation Limit Curve Nomenclature
· TEP-197 Annex 3 Mass Absorption Coefficients derived from XCOM software

New material covered included:
· A comparison of the radiation detectors used in Europe and the US was presented. Critical differences are:

European MAB-604 US Victoreen 440RF/D
Detector type NaI Scintillator Crystal Air Ionization Chamber
Measurement units Sv/hr mR/hr
Geometric shapes 60 cc cylindrical chamber.

· Philips and TCE presented data comparing the RS-503 hypothetical cabinet to the European test method which uses 10cm spacing from the CRT bulb surface. These data are available to all interested parties. I urged other tube manufacturers to contribute data.
· In summary, the European test method is different in just about every aspect of instrumentation, test method, and units of measure.
· Committee members discussed the historical background of the RS-503 cabinet. In addition, changing the overall cabinet shape for the future global standard was discussed. Present day television cabinets do not have a box shape. Mr. Bill Rowe, Thomas Electronics, suggested the Television Manufacturers R-1 Committee be included in the discussion.
· A review of tests performed on aluminum filters. The test results show that scattering occurs in CRT panel glass. A better definition of scattering is needed. The appearance of scattering effects could be due to the broad source of radiation produced by the mask in conjunction with the radiation detector in close proximity.

3.0 Standards and Document Review

None required at this time.

4.0 Environmental Issues

No environmental issues were offered for discussion.

5.0 New Business

No new business was offered.
